Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost for alterations?
Basic alterations, such as hemming trousers or jeans, shortening sleeves on a shirt or jacket, or taking in the waist on jackets or trousers, are complimentary on items purchased in-store. For garments bought at Joseph’s in the past, we offer alterations for a service fee based on the type of work required. Turnaround time may vary depending on current workload. During slower seasons (like winter), we occasionally accept outside alterations. Please call ahead to confirm if we can assist with your garments.

Where can I park?
Metered parking spots are available near our front entrance and throughout the Old Port. These spots are free on Sundays. Additionally, a parking garage is conveniently located directly across the street from us at 427 Fore Street.

Are your clothes made in the USA or Maine?
We source high-quality apparel from across the globe, with a strong emphasis on American and Maine-made goods. Our collection includes denim by Hiroshi Kato and Citizen of Humanity, shirts from Gitman Bros, socks and accessories by Dapper Classics, and more. We are also proud to carry brands like Loyal Citizen, which produce locally here in Maine.

Will my favorite item be available next season?
Short answer: Possibly!
Long answer: Joseph’s carries a curated selection of dozens of brands worldwide, from classic American names like Raleigh Denim Workshop and Citizens of Humanity, to premium Italian labels such as Barmas, Mason’s, and Paul & Shark. We also offer fine tailoring from brands like Jack Victor and Canali. Since our stock evolves as new collections emerge and others shift, it’s always best to reach out if you’re looking for a specific item. Feel free to call or email us, and one of our associates will be happy to assist.

Do I need an appointment for a custom suit fitting?
No appointment is necessary for custom suiting or shirt fittings—we welcome walk-ins daily. For more information, check out our custom suiting section, or reach out to us directly via phone or email if you’d like to set up an appointment.

How much does a suit cost?
Our off-the-rack suits typically range from $695 to $2300, depending on the brand and amount of handwork involved. All off-the-rack suits come with complimentary basic alterations by our master tailor to ensure a perfect fit. We also offer Made-to-Measure and Full Custom suits starting at $1350 for a suit or $975 for a sport coat. The possibilities are endless for custom options, with pricing reflecting your specific choices.

How long does it take to get a suit tailored?
On average, alterations take about a week. Our master tailor ensures every suit fits perfectly, which typically takes 5-7 days, though it may take longer during peak seasons (such as summer). For off-the-rack suits that only need basic alterations like hemming, you can walk out in your new suit the same day. More extensive alterations may take 7-10 days. If we don’t have your size in stock, we can order it—this process usually takes about a week, with another week for alterations.

What custom suiting options do you offer?
We offer a wide range of custom options, from bow ties and shirts to full custom suits. For full details on how to create your perfect custom garment, please visit our custom suiting section.

I live out of town but want to get something altered—what are my options?
We’re happy to ship any items you purchase at Joseph’s, with a modest shipping fee. For customers outside of Maine, we can also refund the Maine State sales tax, ensuring your total cost is close to what you'd pay locally.

What is your return policy?
Joseph’s offers store credit for full-price (non-sale) items returned within 14 days with a sales receipt. All sale items are final sale. Items returned more than 14 days after purchase will incur a 10% restocking fee. No returns, exchanges, or credits will be issued on sale merchandise or non-sale items returned more than 30 days after purchase.

Do you carry more casual or formal clothing?
We pride ourselves on offering a broad selection of both casual and formal wear. Joseph’s boasts Maine’s largest assortment of suits and denim, as well as a diverse range of formal and casual shirts, trousers, and accessories to suit all tastes and occasions.
