TO BE RATHER THAN TO SEEM
This is the North Carolina state motto and our mantra. It’s on the wall of our workshop. And sewn into every pair of our jeans.
Raleigh Denim is the art project/romantic adventure/American enterprise started by us, Sarah Yarborough and Victor Lytvinenko. We free-climbed a bell tower on our first date, stayed out all night our second and started making jeans our 8th year together. We’re both into creating things (stuffed squirrels, pasta, pillows, porches, skateboards — really anything). It’s the way we relate to the world.
WE STARTED WITH THE IDEA OF MAKING THE IDEAL PAIR OF JEANS
The kind you could literally wear everyday (and we did and do). Our first out-of-town order was for Barney’s. We started making every pair ourselves. More orders meant asking friends and family to help.
As we grew, we needed more machines. In searching, we dug deeper into North Carolina’s rich textile history. We hunted for and restored old textile machines. We love everything about these machines, especially the way they over-engineer everything they sew. We train our jeansmiths to make pants from start to finish. Being a community makes for a happy workplace and ensures quality, since we can all check each other’s work.
WHAT QUALITY MEANS FOR US
We believe life’s more pleasurable when you choose things that are made with human passion and intention. We choose denims and fabrics that we fall in love with. Every button we use has a story behind it. We sign our jeans because we’re proud of what we create. We make our clothes to last and become more beautiful as they age, fade and soften.
